The Importance of Sharing Accurate Information

Written by Katie Inouye | Jun 2, 2022 5:00:00 AM

With texting and social media, it is easy to spread information. But effective safety programs have plans in place to share information not only quickly but accurately.

The Dangers of Inaccurate or Missing Information

The old adage that bad news travels quickly is often true. However, if there is an incident or safety concern, it is important the information not only travels quickly but also accurately. Information traveling through word of mouth often is biased and full of errors; this can cause employees to jump to conclusions and then spread false information as fact.

Other circumstances require that information that may not be readily known to employees be communicated to key stakeholders so that they can be aware of changes in the environment and other safety concerns.

A Few Best Practices for Safety Notifications

  1. Conduct a risk analysis of your existing safety and emergency plan and determine any gaps in the communication methods.
  2. Involve your IT department when creating or implementing automated messaging systems.
  3. Use several technologies; no one method of communication will reach everyone.
  4. Determine who has the authority to issue safety alerts.
  5. Make messages clear and concise.
